Subject: The X-Rated Albin Counter-Gambit

Message:
This article by Andrew Martin, which Martin admits himself is propaganda in favor of the opening, inspired me to buy Martin's DVD on the opening. I know it's probably not sound, but it really is a fun opening. And it was used successfully by no lesser of a player than Lasker.

Probably equalize on move 3, since bl has been permitted to play a move he should not have been able to get in without penalty...
I love the Albin on both sides. It just feels like one of those openings one could spend a lifetime playing and studying and never lose interest :)

A very pawnographic debut...

Message:
... I can think of worse ways of getting your jollies! I never knew the line was so replete with possibilities.
Must try it some time...

Take it for granted that a bad word has been said which does not show up on the screen.... for I saw a real interesting Albin annotation and been awhile, Ive forgotten exactly where. I think it was on Silman's site.

Anyone been to it?

Morozevich IS my Hero~! I think probably the highest rated player I have seen be as
adventurously innovative & into new ideas that can be really far out ...but they generally work
out, tho maybe walking a fine line. Perhaps its just that on one else understands or expects
them~? For eg getting hit with an Albin Counter-gambit. But really looking back, even Max
Euwe, despite his win against it, can't say it didnt give him a thinking game. Thanks bogg, I'll
have to look at some of those Moro's!

then Black has a number of options: if 3. Nc3 then ...exd4, 4. Qxd4 Nc6, 5. Qxd5 Be6! leaves Black in good stead. Another option for Black is ...Nc6, clamping down on the central squares.

I have an Albin Game for you all!

Message:
Hi everyone, just to let you know that I have publicly annotated a draw game between me and a buddy called rjacobs. That one started as an Albin.

Cheers.

Chess news:

Aronian, Grischuk Lead Diminished Final Chess Masters -- Midway through the Final Chess Masters in Bilbao, Spain, Levon Aronian of Armenia and Alexander Grischuk of Russia are tied for the lead of the chess tournament. Sergey Karjakin of Ukraine is in third, while Alexei Shirov of Spain is bringing up the rear. The Final Chess Masters is supposed to bring together the top finishers in four of the top chess tournaments of the year: Corus, Linares, M-Tel and Nanjing Pearl Spring. Karjakin won Corus earlier this year, Grischuk won Linares and Shirov won M-Tel. But Veselin Topalov of Bulgaria, the winner of Pearl Spring, and the No. 1 ranked chess player in the world, bowed out, partly citing the diminished purse ...

Retired Kasparov will be the favourite in Karpov rematch -- Like two ageing heavyweights, Garry Kasparov, 46, and Anatoly Karpov, 58, will face up to each other again this month. The 25th anniversary of the first of their five world title matches will be marked in Valencia, Spain, on 21-24 September by a 12-game series (four rapid, eight blitz chess), and there are suggestions that if this is successful they may repeat the exercise in their other chess championship venues, which include London. Frankly, if Kasparov came here I would rather see him in a rematch with the rejuvenated Nigel Short. Though Kasparov is officially retired and Karpov is not, the older chess grandmaster's disastrous last place recently in San Sebastián and ...

Nigel Short thrives despite Vlad Tkachiev distraction -- Nigel Short kept his place in the 2700-rated grandmaster elite this week when the England No1 tied fourth with 7/10 in India's Kolkata Open, a point behind Le Quang Liem of Vietnam. In his recent events Short has been notably strong against the Caro-Kann 1 e4 c6 featured below. All the Kolkata publicity was for Vlad Tkachiev's loss on time while drunk at the chess board. Other GMs have suffered from alcohol, notably Alexander Alekhine in the disastrous middle rounds of the 1935 world title match. In Tkachiev's case, jetlag was probably a factor as he flew to India with hardly a break after winning the French chess championship, and the drunk game was his only defeat ...
