Russia - Rest of the world 48-52 The match between Russia and the rest of the worlds ended today. Russia lost rather highly 48-52.
Is this the first sign that Russia loses the leading position in international chess? Or did they just have a bad day?
What do you think?

I think it was mostly... match between Russia and "rest of former USSR":), so I think that russian chess school is still leading one. But with Leko, Topalov, etc. rest of the world is already close to.

Well... OK, that's probertly true (I think there played Anand, Adams, Leko and j. Polgar, Topalov who aren't from former USSR - countries), but the USSR isn't existing anymore, so the question stays: Is Russia is leading in chess?

Topalov & Adams Did not play.

About your question: I think yes, Russia is still leading in chess compare to any other country. But compare to all of them together it is not so obviously.

That means.... ...you think they will win the next tournament?

russia is still leading Nobody can dispute that Kasparov and Kramnik are #1 & #2 in the world. But look what they ve done : minus 2 and minus 1 in this turnament. Now imagine they would play at their real power and made plus 1 at least . What could be? Russia could win 51-49.
So Russia is still a leader.

So then tell me... why did they play so bad? Was this tourney just fun for them or what? Look for example at the Polgar - Kasparov game! He really played weak. Why? Is he getting too old for chess? Fact is, the world has won and that although Karpov (who is a really instabile player) had a pretty good performance.

Russia - Rest of the world I would like to say three things:

1. This was the FIRST match Russia - Rest of the World. If we still have USSR Ponamariov and Ivantchuk (at least) will be playing on the other side. But fortunally the world today is different.

2. I'm not sure but has this match money envolved?
Because that can be the reason for so poor performances of some players.

3. In 'normal' conditions I think that Russia Team is still stronguer than the rest of the world team.

25 min 10 sec inc rapid chess does not count

Re: Well... I think breakdown is like this:
Assuming that strentght all countries all together should be 100 points, Russia would score 25, next country would have 18, then 15, then 12 etc...

Russia is a leader, but not by too much because USSR power is now "spread" betwee many different countries.

Look on figure skating or gymnastics - Russia is still strong, but USSR was much stronger

Why does... rapid chess not count?

I think zoobrenok is right. Russia isn't that strong as USSR was. But I think that's not bad, make it more interessting and exciting! :)
