Chess sets? What should one look for when purchasing
a new Chess Set(standard wood Staunton design)? Any tips?

And where should I look?
I've looked at a couple of places already such as:

I've seen several nice looking sets on Ebay but I'm not sure of the
quality or how much to bid! Anyone buy a set from EBay?

My desired specs as of today:
Price range: $100 - $300 US
Style: basic Staunton
Size: 4" or 4 1/4" (I think this is called Club size)
Wood: Rosewood or Bud Rosewood
(I'd go with Ebony if I came across a very good deal)
Weight: Triple weighted(if possible--is there a big difference
between Double & Triple weighted pieces?)

Board: Not really long as its the correct size.
(Some of the Sets on EBay come with folding boards?)

I have a suspicion that the set that I'm really looking for is
probably in the $250 - $500 price range--but at least I'm having fun
looking! And who knows... maybe I'll find a really good deal somewhere.

Kim... I am heading up to Oregon next month to check out The Chess Store... I will tell you of it's credibility when I get back... I to am looking into picking up another set or two for my collection... And maybe another analog chess clock...

2 1/4 inch square boards are to specs for clubs and tournaments... and 3 1/2 inch Kings are the minimum height required... But I too prefer 4 inch Kings... They look so much more professional... But when it comes to chess sets, they say it's all in the Knights...

As soon as I am back from Oregon which will be July 8th... I will post a thread on the Chess Store...

ebay Is the best place for my opinion, especially if you are OK with used chess set or chess set with minor problems. Just check it from time to time and there are good chanses to find the deal. I bought my chess set there myself:)

Bro sounds like a nice trip, your doing there :-))

Can I just recommend your looking for: The Jerger Chess Clock, analog off course! It is a wonderful piece of work, truly German craftmanship quality product, reliable, accurate and silent. IHMO, The King Time :-))

Have a nice trip!

Cairo... Thanks for the advice... I will check it out... I might also once again look into the Excalibur to match my Excalibur travel set with pouch for an Excalibur Chess Clock... Failed to get it one time, but the (DGT) 2000 series Digital Clock... It's way better than the Excalibur but has a hard time fitting in my carrying bag...

My two analog Roland Clocks fit though...
